What is the Law on Stopping for a School Bus in Florida?
A person driving an automobile within the State of Florida must bring the vehicle to a complete stop when approaching a school bus that is also stopped and is displaying its stop signal. Drivers are also prohibited from passing the bus until the stop signal has been withdrawn. Drivers are not required to stop when traveling in the opposite direction of a stopped school bus so long as automobile and bus are separated with an unpaved space of at least 5 feet, a raised median or a physical barrier. Drivers should stop for school buses not only because it is required by law but also because yielding to buses provides more safety to the child passengers.
